Do I really need a website?

Updated: Mar 10, 2020

This is a common question we get from businesses we deal with and today we are going to take a look at some of the objections businesses often have about setting up a website, and why you should reconsider.

“I have a Facebook page, so do I really need a website?”

This is a common question among local businesses that having a Facebook page, or other social media platforms for their business is enough. Maybe your company has a Facebook page with a few thousand likes and some positive reviews. Congratulations! We are not trying to convince you that social media isn’t great. However, as rewarding as social media is, it doesn’t replace a website.

When you rely on a social media platform as your business’s primary or only online presence, you are at the mercy of that platform and its algorithm. A lot of company’s learned this the hard way. In 2018 Facebook changed its algorithm, decreasing the organic reach for businesses. A website is your little slice of the internet that you own; you’re in control.

Social media is always changing and evolving. Your customers might have been on Facebook now, Instagram tomorrow, and something totally new in the future. And trends change, and customers move from platform to platform, your website will serve as an anchor.

“I already have enough business, so why do I need a website.”

A website isn’t just about bringing new customers in. It is about providing your existing customers with an even better experience to build loyalty. A fantastic example of this is online banking. By allowing customers to manage their money online from anywhere quickly, they opened a new level of trust and loyalty from their customers. Providing your opening hours, a contact number and location, or having a place to let customers know about any critical updates like a change of hours on public holidays, are all things customers expect today. Do you really want to be the last one in your industry to do so?

“I can’t afford a website, my business is just too small.”

If you’re a small business, then the online age is something you should be embracing! Websites have levelled the playing field in many ways because there isn’t any reason why your website can’t be just as good as much larger companies in your industry.

Furthermore, the internet has actually lowered the barrier of entry for starting your own business. Think of a website like opening a physical store (in fact Amazon, the worlds largest company was built with no physical stores), it puts the cost of a website in perspective.

A website is an investment in your business, and the cost of not having a website is likely to be far higher than the price of setting one up. According to minewhat.com, over 80% of consumers conduct online research before making a purchase. 30% of people say they won’t even consider a business that doesn’t have a website. There are 5.5 billion Google searches per day, which means it’s probably that someone in your area is searching for your services right now. Guess who’s getting business? Not the one without a website.
